Black Hearts Under Black Flags
The Disputed Lands
The Disputed Lands form the heart of the central continent. Rife with ongoing political and military conflict, they form an ever-shifting tapestry of city-states, fiefdoms, and ancestral claims. There are dozens of houses with overlapping birthright claims, and as one family’s fortunes are made or lost, so goes their ability to defend those claims.
Though wars are not uncommon in the Disputed Lands, the geography itself remains fertile and healthy, with ample farmland, verdant plains, and lush forests. This is because most areas suffer only generational conflict; when one house manages to forge stability, they are rarely challenged until their monarch dies before the area dissolves into open conflict.
While some independent city-states do enjoy longevity in the Disputed Lands, these are usually too focused on continued security and survival to really contribute to the larger continental geopolitical landscape.
